In January 2018 China installed a ban on foreign recyclables from being imported into their country. They called it “Operation National Sword” and it is affecting the entire world and the recycling programs.
This is not going to stop us from picking up your recycling and continuing to pursue our challenge for this year, “2019 Challenge is to help make our little corner of the world a better place”.
It is estimated that in 2017 China was taking in over half of the entire world’s recycling objects and utilized their low cost labor to break down these recyclables to be re-used by manufacturers. China was receiving over one-third of the United States recyclables at the time and are now banning the import of most plastics and paper as well as a majority of scrap metal.
Operation National Sword has affected most of the world and the recycling efforts put in place by most countries. Everyone is now having to figure out what they are going to do with their recycling efforts. In the United States, there has been a noticeable amount of roadside pick-up programs that have cancelled their recycling pick-up due to the immense price increase in handling these products. It is far less expensive to simply deal with the garbage side of things and not mess with the recycling. Though it may save a few bucks to not pick up recycling, it would be a major detriment to our environment to not find some way to better reduce, reuse, and recycle as much as we can.
In last month’s blog, we discussed the rising single-use plastics being found in our oceans. Operation National Sword is a major detriment for our oceans, but if we were to cancel our recycling pickup then we would just be adding to the damage. As a company, Anchor Disposal has decided to continue our efforts in recycling because we believe that it is not only the right thing to do, but it is the necessary thing to do. We want to continue to make our little corner of the world a better place and we believe that by continuing to pick up your recycling that we are doing our small part in helping make not only our little corner but the whole world a better place.
We want to thank you for continuing to recycle as much as you can! If you would like to know more about our efforts or what you can do to reduce what goes into landfills, contact us below.
